The San Francisco jury found in Ms. Lopez's favor, determining that Bimbo Bakeries USA had engaged in gender and pregnancy discrimination, in violation of the California Fair Employment and Housing Act. It awarded Lopez $340,700 for losses and damages, plus another $2 million in punitive damages, and more than $1 million in attorneys fees. The verdict was completely affirmed on appeal.
    • Moses Mayne was a union representative with the Northern California Carpenters Regional Counsel, a labor union. In mid 2006, Mayne started experiencing medical issues related to hypertension. He took a medical leave on the advice of his physician from late September through mid-October 2006. The Carpenters Union refused to reinstate Mayne at the conclusion of his leave, notifying him for the first time the day before his return that he would need a medical release to return. Mayne attempted to obtain the newly required release, but was terminated for "job abandonment" before he could provide it to the union. He had made the first available doctor's appointment and notified the union of the date he was set to see his doctor. The Alameda County jury awarded Mayne damages in the amount of $278,538, plus attorneys' fees and costs.
